It is never to late. I bought my 1st guitar in 1963. I never really played with it until last year. I had a stroke last year and I started playing the guitar. I’m very good.
children learn more easily – evidence from how we can learn a full language by age 2
BUT if you are a fast learner and are enthusiastic (and most of all, persistent) you can do the same
as for learning to read notes -
the age old cliche – practice makes perfect.
you can practise by starting small – pick up books made for children to learn
you’ll probably get through them faster because you will understand
and keep practising every keystroke like about a million times
seriously – it’s fun and you’ll get lost in it
some advice-
learn keyboard before you go to guitar (or at least earlier) – it makes reading notes easier to learn and gets you used to it

Its not too late but you need a lot of free time which is why kids pick it up better. If you’ve got several hours a day spare then go for it
