You absolutely don't need money to learn how to play the guitar, all you need is a source.. A source where you can learn the basics about playing the guitar (e.g. "Foden-roberts: How to play guitar" ; http://www.ultimate-guitar.com et cetera.)
In my own opinion, the best way to learn an instrument is by self-studying. And you need to love what are you doing.
For the time being check out Justinguitar.com and click on the lesson index and take a look for yourself. It's very well done and free. The same with Guitarnoise.com and their "songs for beginners" section. Guitarnoise's Beginner Q and A board has some wise advice and there are a heap of helpful people on there. There are enough lessons on technique and songs between the two to keep you busy for a while.
My advice is learn a few simple songs all the way through (I know, easier said than done, but it will pay off) and figure out where you want to go with the instrument. Like buy a songbook of your favorite CD and work through that. Learn a few scales across the whole fretboard, learn what notes they are, what intervals from the root. By then you will be well on your way.
Another hint: practice a bit to a metronome to tighten up your rhythm and timing.
It's okay if you don't have lessons. By the way you've described yourself it looks like you're only a beginner. At this stage it isnt neccessary to have a teacher because you can easily self-teach yourself the basics off the internet.
Once you've gotten yourself up to a stage where you want to play harder stuff it'll take a couple of hours practise a day. Still, whether or not you want a teacher is up to you. Some people are quite capable of going without one. Most guitar players have only taken lessons for a short amount of time or have self-taught themselves.
There are a lot of free guitar lessons. FORGET them. You'll have a bunch of uncategorized material to overlap. That's time consuming.
What I personally recommend is the best video lessons from a pro guitarist: http://guitarstree.com/learn
Try your local community center. They have all types of classes that are cheap. If you don't find anything there, go online and check out ExpertVillage.com. Also, take time to learn your scales. If you want to shred, most of it is scale related.
If you have a little bit of cash you can get a years worth of lessons online with video instruction and everything for like 50 bucks I think. WAY cheaper then a private tutor.
You can always check out Youtube and just type in "beginner tips for playing guitar". Watch out though. You dont want to get taught the wrong technique or something. It can be hard to unlearn.

when i started i was in the same situationl
this is what i did.
first i googled all the notes and chords, and learn those.. all the basics..
they find really simple song tabs on Ultimateguitar.com.. or any other tab site.. and learn from there.. try to play the songs.
i would recommend any blink 182 songs to start with cuz their tabs r simple.
but it takes lots of practice and time

use the internet. youtube is the best place to start. also try:
ultimate-guitar.com
ttabs.com
911tabs.com

ask a friend to teach you how to read tabs.
Then you can go to google and search for tabs of your favorite songs.
That's how i started. Chords dont matter much if you play metal because metal only uses one kind, which is powerchord.
