I like Ibanez or Epiphone in the $100.00 price-range… That would leave you with enough money for a gig bag, a tuner and some picks (thin are a good place to start for an acoustic).
The $100.00 Ibanez Jam Pack is nice, but you may want to upgrade to the Korg tuner I linked to before long. Still… quite a value.
If there's any way you can stretch the budget a bit… This Ibanez Jam Pack comes with a guitar that has a solid spruce top (if they just say spruce or "select" spruce they're plywood). Again, included tuner isn't so great and you might evenually want the Korg. But, it's still an excellent deal. Ibanez makes a nice guitar and you won't find a superior sounding solid spruce top for less.
You picked a good price-range. I wouldn't go any cheaper. If a guitar is hard to play or doesn't sound good… you'll just lose interest. Buying a bad instrument for a beginner is never a good idea in my opinion. I always had a cheap guitar around, but didn't really start to learn how to play until a friend of mine took me out to help me choose some decent gear and have it set up properly. Having even a new guitar set up by a music store that does set ups and repairs is highly recommended. Guitars in this price-range leave the factory playable, but not tweaked to perfection. A pro can often bring the strings down a little lower and adjust the neck to make your guitar easier on the fingers and easier to fret notes cleanly.
