I think you probably mean drop D! There is no such thing as drop A as far as i can tell and if there was and i didn’t know about it and you do you would probably know what strings to use. Im gonna answer as though you’re question was for drop D and my answer is: any strings should do it but heavier ones will sound better try 10 guage 11 will proablably hurt you, but will sound better. If there is such a thing as drop D can you send me a link explaining it?

    No, he means drop A.

Well, it really depends on how much tension you normally like on your strings. Do you use a heavy set normally (like me, I use a set of .012’s for standard EADGbe. Muy tension!)? Do you tend to use a thinner set, like a .009 or .010 set? It’s all relative. What you’re looking for is a set that gives you the tension that you are used to with whatever set you’re going to start using for downtuning. Just think, you’re tuning down a fourth to B, and then dropping the B down another whole step to A. Now, the biggest problem with tuning to A on strings that are too thin is the string will go sharp if you hit it too hard. Here’s my recommendation. I, personally, like a high tension set, so I would like a really thick low A.

So, if you use, say, a .010 set (like most people), I would bump that up to at least a .015 to maintain tension. There are .015 sets out there, if you can believe it (roundwound, too!). La Bella makes a set that, come to think of it, would be just about right for what I think would be a good set for drop A. Now, mind you, these will need a minor nut, intonation, and action adjustment to properly play on, but your best bet is La Bella’s .010-.080 set (http://www.juststrings.com/lab-bge-m.html). Yes, that’s right, .080. The only thing that’s a downside (to almost everyone except for me) is that it has a wound G. If you can’t stand them, I don’t know what to tell you. You could TRY getting a single plain, unwound .024 for the G, but I wouldn’t.

    The string gauges would be as follows: B(from high E)-.015; F#(from high B)-.019; D(from G)-.030 wound; A(from D)-.044; E(from A)-.056; A(from low E)-.080

Now, if you find this to be a bit too thick, you could try their .014-.070 set (http://www.juststrings.com/lab-bge-l.html).

Best of luck, and happy downtuning!
